My first car was also a Volkswagen, not a cool Beatle, but a red Squareback stationwagon. I had an old Porsche engine dropped in it, mainly because the original engine had to be rebuilt anyway. It rocked.
Ooh, Porsche engine, very nice! Must have sounded sweet. I remember the VW tuning magazines of the day loaded up with hot rods with Porsche engines in them.
Being from New England my bug was a rustbucket, but the engine still ran well. The car talk at the time was that if you got a body from the south and an engine from the north you'd have a decent car :)
